My 6-year-old daughter is getting to be quite a solid shooter with her Fisher-Price digital camera. In fact, a few of her images are so impressive that I am considering entering them in a national photo contest.
Believe it or not, there are dozens of photo contests for kids that offer spectacular prizes. I stumbled upon one of them, and when I started researching it I found that there are dozens of ways kids can earn awesome gifts if their shot is considered the best of the best. What’s more, the contests are sponsored by reputable companies, so you don’t have to worry about your kid’s images being ripped off or worse, paying an entry fee and finding out that the contest is a fraud.
Some of the most popular kids’ photo contests offered in the United States are:
ImageMakers National Photography Contest: Developed by the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the contest is part of a comprehensive initiative promoting children’s creativity via photography. According to the website, the goal of the program is to encourage artistic skills and cultural enrichment while helping kids develop an interest in cameras. The downside to this contest is that it is only open to members of the Boys and Girls Club of America. The contest includes four age groups and five categories including:
*Black and white
*Color
*Alternative
*Digital
*Photo essay
National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids: Prepare for some major competition if you plan to enter the National Geographic International Photography Contest for Kids. The photo contest is one of the most popular in the world. According to the company’s website, National Geographic receives more than 5,000 entries from young shutterbugs each year. Photos are judged in the following categories:
*Animals
*Scenery
*People
Winning entries are based on originality and composition.
Ranger Rick Photo Contest: This is the contest my daughter wants to enter. The popular children’s magazine runs a quarterly photo contest for kids 13 and under, and aims to get youngsters outside to document nature at its best. The prizes include national recognition, certificates and free magazines.
