Strengthen Your Marriage by Studying the Gospel Together

One way to strengthen your marriage is to read and study the gospel together. Taking time to have daily or weekly scripture study with just your spouse can give you insight into the gospel that you might not have received before. It will bring you closer together and help you to incorporate the gospel into your marriage relationship. Here are five tips to help make the study time work for you.

1) Set up a time that will work for both of you. If you find that you simply do not have time to read and discuss the scriptures together every day, then aim for a meeting once a week. You could read together on Sunday nights and discuss what you have read. You may want to incorporate it into time you already spend together, such as your weekly planning meeting or budget meeting.

2) Set aside enough time that you can read and have a meaningful discussion. Many times the discussion will be the opportunity for you to build the bonds that you share. If you find that you have time to read every day, but not time for the discussion, try to add extra time on to at least one day of the week. Then you can discuss what you’ve read, learned, and pondered throughout the week.

3) Begin the sessions with a prayer. Praying can bring the spirit into the sessions, and allows further insight. It is also important to pray with your spouse on a regular basis, as well.

4) Choose a topic that interests both of you or choose a specific book of scripture to read and discuss. If you are studying by topic do not forget to include General Conference talks and Ensign articles as well. This can bring additional insight into the discussions that you have.

5) Be flexible. If you find that the time you have scheduled, then you may want to see how you can change it. You should also be flexible for the times when other events may come up.
