Summer Events In the Great Midwest

Continuing our series exploring some of the best summertime family friendly festivals in the Midwest… today we turn our attention to some wonderful ethnic and art events taking place in and around the Chicagoland area.

Gold Coast Art Fair. The event features the work of 400 artists and also includes live entertainment and food booths. It takes place from August 3-5 on Superior, Huron and Erie streets between Wells and Clark streets.

Retro On Rosco. This annual event takes you back in time. A summertime flashback featuring bands playing music from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s. It also includes a food and a family area. The event runs from August 4-5 on Roscoe Street between Damen Avenue and Leavitt Street.

Evanston Lakeshore Arts Festival. This popular event features a silent art auction, live jazz and classical music, and demonstrations. It takes place on August 4th and 5th.

World of Faeries Festival. This family friendly fantasy festival features people dressing up as mythical creatures, with steel sword fighting and Renaissance music. It takes place in Vasa Park in South Elgin on August 4th and 5th.

Lollapalooza. This world-renown three-day music event features 130 contemporary bands on eight stages. Pearl Jam, Daft Punk, and Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals are headlining this year. Check it out at Grant Park on August 4-6.

Ginza Holiday Festival. This Japanese cultural event is held on the grounds of the Midwest Buddhist Temple and features native dancing, food booths, and arts and crafts. It takes place from August 10-12.

Northalsted Market Day. This annual event features hundreds of arts and crafts tents and offerings from the bars and nightclubs of North Halsted Street, food, and three stages of live music. It is called the largest two-day festival in the region. Check it out at Halsted Street between Belmont Avenue and Addison Street on August 11th and 12th.

Chicago Korean Festival. This celebration of Korean culture and cuisine takes place on Bryn Mawr Avenue between Kedzie and Kimball avenues from August 11th to the 12th.

Velika Gospa Croatian Fest. This unique festival celebrates the Croatian culture in observance of the Feast of the Assumption. It takes place on 29th Street at Princeton Avenue on August 15th.

Hobart Lakefront Festival. This annual summer event features musical entertainment, a hog roast and a laser light show. It takes place at Festival Park in Hobart, Indiana from August 16-19.

Michele Cheplic was born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, but now lives in Wisconsin. Michele graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Journalism. She spent the next ten years as a television anchor and reporter at various stations throughout the country (from the CBS affiliate in Honolulu to the NBC affiliate in Green Bay). She has won numerous honors including an Emmy Award and multiple Edward R. Murrow awards honoring outstanding achievements in broadcast journalism. In addition, she has received awards from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association for her reports on air travel and the Wisconsin Education Association Council for her stories on education. Michele has since left television to concentrate on being a mom and freelance writer.
