Summer Reading Series: Dini Dinosaur

left

Have you ever considered swapping out your kid for a dinosaur?

Surprisingly, you might not notice a huge difference between the two if the preposterous proposition became reality.

Dig into Dini Dinosaur and you’ll see why.

The new children’s book by penned by Karen Beaumont gives young readers a sneak peek into the daily routine of a dinosaur Mommy and her mischievous offspring.

Thanks to playful, eye-popping pictures masterfully crafted by illustrator Daniel Roode, kids of all ages will find themselves drawn to this delightful dinosaur family complete with young Dini who loves to dig in the dirt.

After successfully dirtying his entire body, Dini is ordered to take a bath before bedtime. However, the pudgy green dinosaur is not exactly a pro at cleaning up.

Maybe he’s just tired after a long day rolling around in mud or, perhaps, he’s distracted by the mountains of bubbles cascading out of the tub; regardless, the prehistoric cutie jumps into his bath fully clothed.

Did I mention that this dinosaur family sports human duds, including cool-looking red Converse-like stomps?

Young readers will easily relate to Dini’s hip clothes and fondness for frolicking in a tub full of fluffy bubbles, though moms may stop short of bonding with Mama Dino when they read her reaction to her son’s absent-mindedness.

Rather than roar at her little guy after he dives into the tub fully dressed, Mama Dinosaur smiles and gently reminds him to remove individual articles of clothing.

This back and forth goes on for the better part of the book with pint-sized Dini removing his pants, but forgetting to take off his shirt, and then trying to scrub his head, but realizing he still has his hat on.

Finally, Mama Dinosaur returns to see how her mini man-eater is faring:

She looked him up and down and all around.

OH NO!

“You didn’t wash behind your horns!

You didn’t scrub your back

There’s soap still on your scales and your toenails are all black!”

Sound familiar?

Mama Dino eventually takes matters into her own hands and scrubs her kid clean. Next, it’s off to bed, but not without some stories, songs and snuggles.

Then, in a move that transcends time and species, Mama Dinosaur ends up falling asleep in Dini’s room.

Now, that’s something any parent can relate to.

If you are looking for a new bedtime book this summer or you simply want to keep your 4-to 8-year-old on the right reading track while school is out, Dini Dinosaur is the perfect pick. You can find the richly animated picture book online at HarperCollins’ website and at discount retailers nationwide.
