Summer Travel: Saving Money Down South

Who says you have to jet off to Mexico, Hawaii or the Caribbean to enjoy a sizzling summer vacation? If you want to spend less but get more out of your next family trip consider heading to the Southern portion of the U.S. That’s where you’ll find some hot deals on cool family-friendly events.

Take a look:

ATHENS, GEORGIA

It’s probably best known as the hometown of the mega-popular band R.E.M. and this summer the city of Athens, Georgia is rolling out the red carpet for music-loving families. From June 18-22, 2008, the historic downtown area will host the 12th annual five-day AthFest. The songfest features more than 175 bands and a massive artisan market. The music festival also includes the Flagpole Athens Music Awards and an incredible KidsFest.

To help cash-strapped families take advantage of the rockin’ summer event the Holiday Inn Express is offering an Athfest hotel package, which includes two nights’ accommodations in a room with either a king-size bed or two doubles as well as continental breakfast daily, two AthFest wristbands, two AthFest 2008 CDs, two AthFest T-shirt vouchers, two tickets for a two-hour guided bus tour of the historic music sites in Athens, and a $10 downtown Athens gift certificate for just $149 for the first night and $79 for the second night. In addition to all the loot you pick up as a part of the package deal the hotel is also throwing in AthFest stickers, coupons for local restaurants, and an AthFest tote/backpack to store all the goodies.

SAVANNAH, GEORGIA

If your family prefers history to music then you might consider the following deal being offered by the Mulberry Inn in Savannah. The lodging’s “Land and Sea” package includes two nights accommodations, breakfast daily, afternoon tea, tickets for the Savannah—Then & Now tour with Oglethorpe Trolley Tours, admission to the Owens-Thomas House, and a one-hour narrated sightseeing riverboat cruise along the Savannah River.

The historic and charming inn is located in the heart of downtown Savannah, where it has been a staple since the 1860s. The building once housed a cotton warehouse and livery stable before being turned into the second Coca-Cola bottling company in the early 1900s. These days, it has 145 spacious guest rooms, a beautiful courtyard, and an outdoor heated pool. Summer rates start from $499 for two nights in a room with a double or king-size bed. The offer is good through the end of August.
