Summer Vacation Exercise Tips

Don’t let your annual summer road trip put the brakes on your exercise routine. Traveling shouldn’t be an excuse to stop working out. Rather, look at your trip as a way to spice up your fitness regime.

For example, if you are an avid elliptical fan, but the hotel you are staying at only has a treadmill and a stationary bike, then give those a try. Another option: hit the hotel’s pool or go for a jog at a nearby park. Doing so will not only allow you to get in some great sightseeing, but you’ll be burning calories at the same time.

However, if you decide to get in your exercise by running in an unfamiliar city, there are some important precautions you should take before lacing up and heading out:

First and foremost, be aware of your surroundings. Before you hit the road on foot, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with your route. Check the areas around your hotel or campgrounds for potential hazards. Or, ask the hotel/motel desk clerk, concierge, bell staff or park rangers about problem or high-risk areas, and avoid them.

Next, always carry identification. Even if you are planning to go on a short jog, you should never leave your hotel room without proper ID. In addition, you might consider jogging with your cellphone or at least carry some change to make an emergency phone call.

Another tip: If it is possible, consider jogging or walking with a family member or friend, especially if you are hitting the streets in the early morning hours or late at night.

You should also wear clothing that makes you visible to motorists–bright colors for day and white or reflective clothing at dawn and dusk.

Another way to stay safe is to avoid isolated roads, trails and paths. Instead, stick to well-lit, well-populated routes, especially if you are jogging/walking/running alone.

Finally, remember to stay alert, especially if you’re in a strange area. As much as it may help you run faster, consider leaving your iPod in the hotel room. It’s safer to jog in unfamiliar areas without wearing headphones.
