Sunday Travel Funnies

How many times have you been pulled over by a police officer? What’s the most bizarre violation you’ve ever been ticketed for? It may be hard to top the one a New York man recently received. According to New York City’s traffic office, the Orange County resident ran a red light on Manhattan’s West Side… in his rowboat.

Police say the man was issued a $50 traffic ticket in the mail for running the light in December. The notice included photographs of the vehicle and its license plate captured by traffic cameras that monitor Manhattan’s intersections. But, it turns out the license plate number on the ticket didn’t match any on the man’s four-wheeled vehicles. However, it did match those on the registration for his aluminum rowboat, which he says hadn’t left his yard in years. Not only that, but the man insisted he wasn’t in New York at the time he was supposedly ignoring the city’s traffic laws.

But all’s well that ends well—-according to news reports, the man’s ticket will be dismissed. No word on the mystery driver… and his vehicle.

Now, here’s a story about a man who could have easily dismissed his traffic ticket himself, but made headlines for NOT doing so.

A police chief in Wisconsin told news reporters he wasn’t about to take the easy way out when he accidentally drove past a stopped school bus with its emergency lights flashing.

Instead, Richard Knoebel wrote himself a ticket for $235, and docked himself four points on his driving record. What’s more, Knoebel didn’t flinch when his violation made the local paper.

“If it brings notice to people that they should be stopping for school buses, I don’t mind the notoriety,” he said.

Knoebel went on to explain that at the time of the incident he saw a car coming from behind and thought it might hit a nearby dump truck, so he moved to pass the truck before he saw the stopped school bus in the far lane. He said he didn’t realize he had passed the bus until it was too late.

Would you have written yourself a ticket?
