I decided to take my oldest son out the other day for a mommy and son dinner and shopping date. My son is 5 years old going on 15 by the way. I thought it a good opportunity while we were in the car listening to his latest favorite song, “Love is a Verb” by DC Talk, to share with him how awesome God is.
With great emphasis, I decided to ask my son, “Did you know that Jesus is so awesome and powerful—more powerful than all the super heroes out there?!” My son responded matter-of-factly as if I was just born yesterday, “Yeah, well sort of; Jesus is a little bit more powerful.” I went on to explain how God made the whole world and the stars in the sky. I reminded him of how God’s Spirit was in Jesus and He paid the ultimate price for our sins so we could live forever with Him. I wondered if my son was a bit confused so I reiterated how Jesus has more power than Batman, Superman, and Spiderman…. more power than all the super heroes. I paused, feeling the need to ask him if he understood that superheroes are not real but Jesus is. A bit annoyed with all my questions, my son told me, “I know that.”
When I listen to my son share with me about Jesus, I’m shocked at how much my son appears to understand. Though I don’t believe he grasps the impact of sin, he does get that God is above all authority and is real. My son is the type of kid who’d rather have less talk and more play. I find it so important to share with him regardless, and I really want to know how much he really understands.
After there was brief moment that passed in the car, my son proclaimed that Jesus was, “the awesomest and can get the bad guys!” That’s my boy; full of passion for righteousness sake. As he grows and matures, I hope he will continue to see Jesus as his superhero. That is in fact what He is to me.
