Surfing Mamas

If one of your New Year’s resolutions includes learning to master a new sport this next travel deal could put you on track to accomplishing your goal in 2008.

Granted, you must know how to swim, but other than that there are few restrictions associated with Surf Diva’s latest offer. The first women’s surf school was started more than a decade ago in La Jolla, California by twin sisters and has grown into an international hit that draws hundreds of women to Southern California’s shores each year.

In the years since its inception Surf Diva has been joined by numerous other women’s surf schools around the world, but it remains as one of the most popular and reputable, running private, weekend, and week-long clinics year-round in La Jolla, as well as Costa Rica surf vacations. The company also has its own line of women’s surf gear and apparel.

This particular deal is priced at $150 and includes a two-day weekend clinic for beginners. Prices include a rental surfboard and wetsuit and instruction. Hotel accommodations and transportation are extra.

The two-day intro course includes a group discussion about equipment and safety. Once that is complete you’ll practice basic techniques on the beach with instructors before moving out to the water. According to tour operators, only after everyone in the group is completely comfortable will the large group be divided into smaller groups and an instructor assigned to each group, for closer attention. Once you are in the water you’ll try catching waves on your own or with an instructor. You will gradually work up to more challenging waves and techniques as the day progresses.

Remember this is a women’s-only surf school so you will be in the company of other females who are just as unfamiliar with wave riding as you are. If at the end of the two-day session you are itching to advance to bigger waves you have the option of enrolling in week-long surf vacations, which are also run by Surf Diva.
