“Sweet Caroline” Revealed

Mystery solved!

Have you ever wondered who inspired Neil Diamond’s No.1 song “Sweet Caroline?” After more than four decades of keeping the secret, the award-winning singer spilled the beans yesterday.

According to Diamond, Caroline is not only a real woman, she is also alive and well… and just recently found out that the song is about her. The lucky lady… President John F. Kennedy’s daughter Caroline.

In an interview that went public yesterday, the 66-year-old singer said he intentionally hid the fact that his mega-popular song was inspired by the late president’s offspring.

“I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her someday.”

Diamond got his chance when he performed the song via satellite at Caroline Kennedy’s 50th birthday party.

Diamond said the entire song was written by chance. At the time Diamond says he was a “young, broke songwriter” who happened upon an “innocent, wonderful” picture of Caroline in a magazine. But, it wasn’t until years later that he would write the words and music to the smash hit in a Memphis hotel room.

“It was a No. 1 record and probably is the biggest, most important song of my career, and I have to thank her for the inspiration,” Diamond said. “I’m happy to have gotten it off my chest and to have expressed it to Caroline. I thought she might be embarrassed, but she seemed to be struck by it and really, really happy.”

Are you kidding me?

I can’t believe that Neil Diamond would think that Caroline Kennedy would be embarrassed to learn that she served as the inspiration to his hugely popular hit song. Can you imagine how many girls named Caroline have likely dreamed that Diamond was referring to them in his song? I can’t tell you how many times I’ve listened to the Beatles’ classic “Michelle” and wondered who served as the inspiration for that ditty. As a young girl my dad tried to convince me that the song was about me. Once I learned how to read I quickly figured out differently since my name has only one “l” in it.

My other question: How was Diamond able to keep the secret for more than 40 years?
