Taking Care of Yourself

It is time when the kids are settling into a new routine at school. I’ve blogged in the past on the importance of adjusting your family’s routine to the new school schedule. It is a great time to start holding family home evening and family prayer on a regular basis. You may need to adjust your schedule as well. The beginning of the school year is a great time to make sure that you are taking care of yourself spiritually, physically, and emotionally as well. If you are not taking care of yourself you are not as able to you’re your children. Here are three areas to consider making changes in.

1) It is important to take the time to strengthen yourself spiritually. If all of your children are in school, you can take advantage of the quiet to set aside some time for personal scripture study. If you still have little ones at home, you may be able to take advantage of their naptimes. If you live close to a temple you may want to see if you could visit more often during the day.

2) It is just as important to take care of yourself physically. This can become much more difficult as you run your children from activity to activity. You may also have children in Seminary so you may be getting up early to drive your children every day. While you are doing all of these activities, it is even more important to make sure that you are getting the rest you need, eating well and exercising. If you do these things you will more energy to meet the needs of your family.

3) As a parent you constantly worry about meeting the emotional needs of your children. You can find yourself stretched thin as you juggle homework, spending time with each of your children, and doing the important things you need to as a family. It is important to take the time to do things that you enjoy occasionally. It is important to find time to relax on a regular basis.
