Tasty Travels

If you are a fan of pizza pies then you might consider hopping on the next flight to Naples, Italy. It’s no secret that the city makes some of the finest pizzas in the world, but this weekend chefs there are offering a one-of-kind pie to honor a special visitor.

Naples’ world-class pizza makers have invented a pontiff’s pizza in recognition of Pope Benedict XVI one-day visit to the city to celebrate Mass and attend a meeting.

Chefs at one of Naples’ most famous restaurants, the bastion of Neapolitan cooking Ciro a Santa Brigida came up with the idea on a whim.

So what’s on this special pie created by cooks in the city that invented the original fast food?

According to the owner of Ciro a Santa Brigida, the pizza features a rich tomato sauce that covers the pie and in the center of the pizza is a yellow and white (the Vatican colors) design made out of corn and mozzarella. The chefs’ note the pizza’s flavors are “heavenly.”

The “pizza del pontefice” is being offered to anyone frequenting the restaurant, though owners don’t expect the pope to be stopping by for a slice. Regardless, they say it is their way of giving a gift to him indirectly.

No word on how much a single slice will run you, but I’m sure it costs less than a one-of-a kind dessert being offered in Atlantic City.

In what is considered the latest decadent creation to join the ranks of ultra-expensive desserts a restaurant in Atlantic City, New Jersey is catering to high-rollers (and big winners) with a unique $1,000 sweet treat.

Brulee: The Dessert Experience (a dessert-only eatery) is offering the four-figure confection to diners with expensive taste. The chocolate brownie-like dessert is topped with gold dust and imported Italian hazelnuts and served in a $750 Baccarat crystal that you get to take home as a souvenir. (So basically it is a $250 brownie with a side of vintage port wine.)

Apparently, most people prefer indulging in brownies at home because according to restaurant managers, in a year’s time, Brulee has sold just three of its pricey desserts. Of course, that hasn’t stop a competing establishment, Red Square, a Russian-themed restaurant nearby, from offering a $1,000 chocolate cake with caviar and pricey vodka served in Russian Faberge eggs to its customers.

I think I’ll stick with The Cheesecake Factory.
