Thanksgiving 101 – Rick Rodgers

When my husband and I were first married, we often went out to eat with friends on Thanksgiving. It made for a relaxing day. But once we had children I wanted more for them than that. Thanksgiving seemed like a great day for family traditions and bonding. The trouble was that the thought of making an actual Thanksgiving dinner was so intimating. I’d helped with Thanksgiving, and had brought things to contribute, but wasn’t sure I could pull off the entire meal. Particularly when I found out we had guests coming.

Thanksgiving 101 by Rick Rodgers gave me the confidence and know how to pull off the big meal! There are 150 recipes, but the book is much more than recipes. Rodgers teaches the cook and host how to plan and coordinate everything so that you don’t have too many recipes needing your attention at once. He teaches the cook how to have everything come out done and warm at the same time. He gives detailed directions for cooking different types of turkey. All the traditional recipes are included, along with some interesting background information. You’ll find the traditional green bean casserole, gravy, and pumpkin pie. But you will also find exotic menu suggestions like “tamale” Stuffing and pumpkin ravioli. You’ll find all sorts of fun drinks and desserts. Even the classic recipes are improved upon. I’d made mashed potatoes many times, but until I read this book I didn’t know to use hot milk to make them extra creamy.

Rodgers also gives the host directions for setting up a buffet, and ideas for table settings. The reader will find lists of needed items to buy and set, a time frame for preparation for the big day, and ideas for making the day go smoother.

I am so glad I found this book early on. It’s helped make my Thanksgiving dinners delicious and almost hassle free. All the shopping, planning, and cooking is still a lot of work, but this book makes it all flow better.
