The 30-Day Challenge

calendar I mentioned earlier in the month that I’ve been taking a 30-day challenge to get more organized. When I started it, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting. A course on filing paperwork? Tips for how to tidy up my desk? Lessons on how to create color-coded hanging files? All I knew was that a friend had recommended it, and I was eager to achieve the kind of results she claimed she’d achieved.

I signed up for it, and started the first day with no idea what I was getting myself into. An e-mail with a link was delivered to my inbox, and I followed the link to a video. Instead of a lecture on how to properly dust my recipe books, I was asked to think about my priorities, what things in my life were most important to me. That surprised me—what does that have to do with filing my index cards? But I did the assignment.

The next day, we talked about setting goals that are in alignment with our priorities so we’re always moving toward things that bring us real joy instead of temporary satisfaction. Ah, now it was making more sense.

As I watched each day’s video, I was a little more impressed all the time. The basic premise of this challenge is learning how to use a to-do list, but in a way that’s more precise, broken down, realistic, and personalized than any list I’ve ever made. What’s best of all is that the teacher, Chalene Johnson, repeatedly encourages you to realistically evaluate your list and make sure you’re not filling it up with a hundred things you can never possibly get done in one day. She shows you how to winnow it down and make it doable.

I graduated from the course today, and I have to say, I really learned a lot. I’ve accomplished so much this month. I’ve learned about my own habits and how I need to change them in order to get where I want to be. My business has picked up and I’m handling it better – in fact, my income next month will be twice what it was last month. But that’s not all – I’ve been setting goals having to do with my family and health as well. I heartily recommend that you give the challenge a try. It’s completely free.
