The Art of Crafts – Family Time Well Spent

Yesterday, my daughter told me she was bored and wanted something to do. Now, most of you with four and five year olds probably recognize that I’m bored actually translates to play with me or spend time with me, I miss you. So with that in mind, I told her to go find her shoes and to change her clothes.

We headed off to Michael’s on a quest for a project to do together. We wandered around the store for more than an hour, exploring our options and discussing what would interest her. We came around the corner to a kiosk of holiday decorations for Christmas, Thanksgiving and Halloween.

After much more discussion, we elected to pick up a small wooden haunted house and a pumpkin facemask. The two items were both under $2 and then we picked up some paints that were on sale and a slightly more expensive box filled to the brim with foam stickers in the shapes of ghosts, cats, brooms and jack-o’-lanterns. We brought home all our loot and set up at the kitchen table.

For the next hour, she added paint to the house including a red roof, a blue back wall, an orange front and black, weathered sides. We added two or three coats of paint to it and now we’re waiting to add a little more trim to the project followed by a few stickers to dress up the house and voila she will have her very own Halloween decoration.

Michael’s is full of great little crafts and art ideas that are easy for children and adults alike to perform. So if you’re looking for some craft idea to do with your kids, head to Michael’s and check it out – we’ll definitely be going back there for some wooden nutcrackers to paint for Christmas.

What projects have you done with your kids?
