The Aunt Dimity Series – Nancy Atherton

cacadccAunt Dimity is as savvy as they come. She’s observant, persistent, intelligent, can see through a lie a mile away – there’s just one slight problem. Aunt Dimity is dead.

That’s right, she’s dead. But that doesn’t stop her! She has found a way to communicate with her niece Lori, and that’s by writing in a journal. Whenever Lori opens her journal and writes down her problem, Aunt Dimity can write back, and her answers appear in the journal. It’s pretty convenient, really.

The series begins with the novel, “Aunt Dimity’s Death,” where we see Lori “meet” Aunt Dimity for the first time. Lori is to inherit Dimity’s fortune, but first she must go to the old English cottage where Dimity lived and find some letters which have been hidden away. Dimity helps her in her quest, and they form a solid relationship. As the series continues, we see Lori have twins, and have many other adventures as well, all with Dimity to guide her with wisdom from the other side.

The other books in the series are: “Aunt Dimity and the Duke,” “Aunt Dimity’s Good Deed,” “Aunt Dimity Digs In,” “Aunt Dimity’s Christmas,” “Aunt Dimity Beats the Devil,” “Aunt Dimity, Detective,” “Aunt Dimity Takes a Holiday,” “Aunt Dimity: Snowbound,” “Aunt Dimity and the Next of Kin,” “Aunt Dimity and the Deep Blue Sea,” and, being released this month, “Aunt Dimity Goes West.”

I enjoyed most of the Dimity books I’ve read with the exception of “Aunt Dimity Beats the Devil.” That one was a little bit too supernatural for me. There are also a few spots where the books push the appropriateness envelope, but depending on how sensitive you are as a reader, you may or may not find them offensive. I personally wasn’t too bothered, but that’s your judgment call. Overall, I found the books different, interesting, and entertaining.
