The Christian Mom

I am still young. I have not yet experienced the joy of motherhood although I have a great desire to become a mother one day. If I am blessed to become a mother I hope to be like the many good Christian mothers I have encountered, including my own mother. In honor of Mother’s Day, this blog is focused on the Christian mom.

The Christian mom is strong for the Lord, strong for her husband, and strong for her children. The Christian mom’s foundation is her devotion and obedience to the Lord. Her commitment to the Lord strengthens her throughout the many trials she faces each day. The Christian mom is knowledgeable in the Word of God. She is prayerful, praying for her husband, her children, and for others who may be in need. She exhibits the fruit of the Spirit found in Galatians 5:22-23: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” The Christian mom is thankful, honest, patient, devoted, courteous, hospitable, faithful, humble, and loving.

Secondly the Christian mom is a faithful wife, submissive to her husband. Ephesians 5:24 states: “Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” She is always honest and dedicated to her husband. The Christian mom loves and supports her husband. She strives to make sure her marriage is centered on God.

Finally the Christian mom is a rock for her family. She teaches her children about the Lord. The Christian mom comforts her children in times of difficulty and is patient when her children try her. Her children and others see Christ through her life. The Christian mom is a teacher, helper, friend, giver, comforter, and provider. And most of all, the Christian mom is a lover of the Lord, her husband, and her children.

I think that the words of King Solomon about the virtuous woman are an appropriate summary. In Proverbs 31:10-31 Solomon, the wisest man on earth besides Jesus, wrote:

“An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.”
