The Crib Bedding Dilemma

After buying a crib bedding set for the arrival of our son and after realizing that we may never again have a dedicated nursery (our two children will be sharing for awhile at least), I have decided that all those uber cute themed nursery sets are not for me or my psuedo nursery. I like things to match and the only way to guarantee the longevity of matching bedding is to go white.

I am realizing that going white is easier said than done. After spending countless hours on-line trying to find “white” crib bedding that is modern, clean, and simple, I have found that what I have in my mind does not exist in my price range. I want a durable white cotton crib bumper and a matching white cotton crib bed skirt. No frills or patterns just high quality cotton. Upon making this discovery, I have decided that I am going to make them myself (with some help from my husband’s very talented aunts).

Today I started my crib bedding making project by taking measurements of our convertible crib. Because I am a very visual person, I fabricated a mock crib bumper out of paper to ensure that my measurements were correct. While doing so I realized that the ties for the bumper would have to be custom placed given the width and number of crib slats. In the midst of taking these measurements, I realized that the mattress height was going to be too high for the bumper to fit and tie properly. I had to lower the mattress before I could get truly accurate measurements for the ties (and to get a visual for the over all balance). Changing the height of the mattress would necessitate a change in the length of the bed skirt which was good to discover now before I made it the proper length for the higher mattress height.

In the end I was able to get all my measurements (including the number, width, and length for the bumper ties). Now I need to calculate how many yards of fabric to buy and actually go out and find a high quality white cotton fabric with a good feel and thickness. Now I just hope I can find the fabric that I have in mind.
