I know, I know. . .this is a little post dated. Since our regular education blogger Kaye Siders has left, several of us from the Families.com community have been guest blogging sporadically here in Education. Consequently, the regularly posted “week in review” blogs that many of us are accustomed to seeing in various sections of the Families.com blogs were missing. But never fear! We’re working on getting you caught up in case you’ve missed some of the exciting blogs in education over the last several weeks.
Did you read My Inner City Story? I started a series sharing some thoughts about what it was like to teach and work in the inner city. While the series started with 3 Types of Teachers (a commentary on what it takes to teach in the inner city), and Inner City Conditions (a description of classrooms and problems facing inner city students) these are mentioned in the last week in review. The series however, continued with an explanation of why alternative certification programs don’t work well in inner city schools. Finally, I finished with Practices that Work describing at least one school where innovative thinking has allowed for some creative solutions to the challenges facing inner city students.
Before Kaye left, she gave us one more article on Making Parent-Teacher Conferences Successful. In it, she described what the NEA (National Education Association) said that teachers could do to help alleviate stressful situations for parents.
Early in November, Sherry Holetzky published a blog simply titled Teachers. It is a fantastic response to an earlier blog published by Kaye in which she asks parents if they can describe the perfect teacher.
Sherry also shared with us the ‘education’ she is receiving since she recently became a substitute teacher. If you haven’t had the chance go check out her thoughts in Substitute Teacher: A Real Learning Experience.
