The Fitness Club Checklist

When it comes to choosing a fitness club – how do you know the one you are looking at is the one you want to join? How do you weigh one fitness club against another? Obviously the cost is a huge factor, the dues, extra fees and guest fees are all going to weigh in on your decision – but what else do you need to make your decision?

Here’s a few things to run down and document in order to facilitate making your choice about a fitness club.

First and foremost, how do you like the facility? Is it a good one? Is the location convenient to your home or your office? You don’t want to drive ten miles out of your way no matter how nice the club is. Ideally, the club will be located somewhere easily accessible to you in your daily travels.

During your tour of the facility, what was the age and status of the equipment? Was it in good repair? Did they have the latest machines? Are the locker rooms clean and spacious? Are the lockers securable? How clean are the showers? How clean is the equipment? Are the smells pleasant or not?

What is the parking lot like? Is there plenty of parking? Is the parking limited? How far away from the building do you have to park and walk? What are the hours? If the fitness club is open during the hours of darkness – is there plenty of light in the parking area?

Look at the people inside the fitness club – check out the individuals – do you feel comfortable in the atmosphere? What is the age range of the patrons? Did you get a chance to check out the swimming pool? Is it large? Is the time it is available limited? Do you have access to a lap pool? What kinds of water aerobics classes are offered? What are the hours of the lifeguard?

Try to check out the fitness club during high traffic times – is there a lot of waiting around for the equipment? Do they offer a myriad of different classes? Is there flexibility in the times of the classes offered? Are there plenty of staff members available? What about personal trainers? Does the fitness club offer a complimentary session with a personal trainer in order to get your personal fitness assessment done? What types of personal trainers are available? What are their credentials? What are the fitness club’s standards for certification for the trainers?

Finally, what are the costs associated? How much are your dues? What does it cost for you to bring a friend along? Are there any other fees associated such as with aerobics classes? Once you have answered all of these questions, you will likely have built an idea in your mind of the fitness club and it’s suitability for your personal use.

Good luck in looking for the fitness club that is right for you.
