The Forbidden Vacation

When was the last time you took a vacation without your kids?

Or, more importantly, when was the last time you announced to others that you were planning to take a trip sans munchkins?

Polls show that very few parents jet-off on holidays minus the kiddos. What’s more, a huge chunk of the moms and dads, who do book a tropical escape alone, are not willing to freely reveal their plans.

What are they afraid of? That people will think they are selfish for enjoying time at a fab vacation destination without their children. Or, perhaps, they are afraid of the backlash from jealous peers who wish they could escape from the chaos of everyday life themselves.

In any event, there are a slew of companies that customize vacations for adults only, so why not take advantage of them?

Adults-only resorts are extremely popular with parents and single travelers who are 18 years or older. Couples Resorts in Jamaica; Club Med in the Caribbean; Sandals Resorts in Antigua, St. Lucia, and the Bahamas; Secrets Resorts in the Caribbean; and Breezes Resorts in the Bahamas, Montego Bay, and Jamaica do not allow children on their properties. Rather, adults are pampered in intimate settings that feature romantic candlelit dinners, and peaceful sunset strolls on powder soft sand beaches.

Another option for parents or adults looking to recharge their batteries during a quick weekend getaway in a romantic setting is a Bed and Breakfast. Many B and Bs around the country do not permit children to spend the night. You can actually find a listing of hotels, resorts and other accommodations that specialize in adults-only rooms by consulting Zagat.com and looking for properties listed under “Children Not Recommended.”

Finally, adults-only cruises are gaining in popularity. The voyages are designed specifically for adult passengers looking to spend their time on the high seas enjoying peace and quiet. Some companies even allow you to cruise in the buff, while others allow kids on the ship, but have separate pools and other accommodations that are reserved exclusively for adults.
