The Frugal Alternative to an Expensive Garden Tool

Gardening by growing your own food is a great frugal activity. If you like to garden, then I am sure you’ve come across many tools that seem absolutely necessary for success. But usually, there is a frugal alternative to be had for a fraction of the cost or even for free. One of these tools has to do with maintaining a healthy lawn. It is the aerator.

Aerating the lawn is one of the key ways to have a healthy lawn. It will allow the roots of your grass to get the much needed oxygen and air that they need to flourish. You can buy or rent aerators to do the job. But this can get expensive.

The other day, we were feeding the fish in a pond within a professional garden. We like to go there often for the activities and the wonderful beauty of the outdoors, but I have also gotten my share of ideas from just being observant while out in such as place. The gardeners were busy cutting the grass in a section next to the pond. On the end of their large mowers were spikes on a wheel. These spikes followed behind the mowing blade to aerate the lawn. Watching these professional gardeners mow the lawn gave me some frugal inspiration.

The next time you mow your lawn, put on a pair of cleats, spiked golf shoes or other athletic shoes that have spikes or divots. The spikes in the shoes will aerate the lawn as you mow. This will not only save you money, but it will also save you time. Every garage or attic seems to have at least one pair of cleats or golf shoes somewhere in hiding. A husband, a boyfriend, a daughter, a son, someone should have an old pair you can use. And if you really don’t have any cleats or spiked shoes, just pick up a used pair at a garage sale or thrift store. You’ll have a nicer lawn without the expense.
