The Golden Globe Nominations Are Announced

The award races are off and running! The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced the nomination for the upcoming 65th annual Golden Globes award show. Atonement, which stars Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy, was the big winner – well as far as nominations goes – with seven including Best Picture-Drama, Best Actress-Drama, Best Actor-Drama, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score.

The other films nominated for Best Picture were American Gangster, Eastern Promises, The Great Debaters, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood. Sadly, I have only heard of a couple of these movies and seen none!

Right behind Atonement with five nominations was Charlie Wilson’s War. It was nominated for Best Picture-Musical or Comedy, Best Actor-Musical or Comedy (Tom Hanks), Best Supporting Actress (Julia Roberts), Best Supporting Actor (Philip Seymour Hoffman – I just love him!), and Best Screenplay.

The films Michael Clayton and No Country for Old Men> both received four nominations.

I am always excited when the Golden Globes come around to officially kick off the award season, but there is a dark cloud hanging over award ceremonies this year. I am speaking, of course, of the writer’s strike.

If this thing is not settled soon, we could see picket lines along the red carpet. We could have celebs who win an award giving a pro-union acceptance speech. The hosts might not be as polished without the help of writers. Worst yet, celebrities might not show up at all!

As it stands right now, the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) has only agreed to allow guild writers to write narrations, produce skits, and online banter for the Screen Actors Guild Awards to be held January 27th.
WGA spokesman Gregg Mitchell has said no decision has been made by the guild as to whether they will give the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards a waiver. The Academy Award show is scheduled for February 24th.
