The Green Cars of the Stars

Yesterday, I blogged about Daryl Hannah and how she was one of the first celebrities to have her car converted to run on biodiesel. But, she is not the only celebrity that drives green.

I think the first green car I remember hearing that a celebrity was driving was the Toyota Prius. In fact, when we lived in San Diego almost ten years ago, we visited the Getty Center and they had hookups for electric cars such as the Prius. The Prius has plenty of fans now days, but some of the more famous are Cameron Diaz, Julia Roberts, America Ferrera, Alicia Silverstone, Brad Pitt, Woody Harrelson, Harrison Ford, Susan Sarandon, and Leonardo DiCaprio – all have driven a Prius at some point.

But, there are plenty more environmentally friendly cars out there. Paris Hilton, whom I would not picture as the most conscious celebrity, drives a GMC Yukon. Now you may think Yukon, huge gas guzzling SUV, but this particular Yukon is the first full-size hybrid SUV and gets 21 mpg in the city. Okay, that is not spectacular mileage, but it is a 31% improvement over the non-hybrid Yukon.

If you want to talk great gas mileage, talk to George Clooney (and if I could, I don’t think gas mileage would come up!). George drives the Tango 600, a cute little two seater electric car that gets 80 miles to the gallon. However, the car is six inches narrower than many motorcycles, so that 80 miles might not be the most comfortable to travel.

Woody Harrelson has apparently changed from the Prius to the Volkswagen Beetle TDI. While that may not sound green, Woody has had it converted to run on biodiesel. But, if you are looking for something a little bigger with a little better gas mileage than the hybrid Yukon, you can ask Charlize Theron how she likes her Lexus RX Hybrid 400H. It gets 27 mpg in the city.

While I was on vacation over the Labor Day weekend, we got to see a Smart Car up close and personal. I must admit that I was amazed at the room inside, but as a family of three, there is no way we could even think about getting one. I like the biodiesel idea, but right now, that seems to be pretty unpractical for the everyday person.
