The Issue of Child Support

While some divorced people have no trouble with a responsible ex-spouse paying child support, other people struggle every month to receive enough money to help raise the children. I was one of the fortunate people but my best friend was not. I know from her experience and even my own, even if you and your ex-husband or ex-wife get along as the best of friends, always take the child support through the court system.

Sadly, the majority of newly single parents struggle with the issue of child support. While some parents have a hard time paying due to low finances, other parents are perfectly capable but simply feel the money is going to the ex-spouse rather than the child. Obviously, this type of thinking is irrational and very unfair to the child. When bitterness gets in between parents and child support, major issues erupt.

Sometimes, it is necessary to take measures when it comes to receiving child support. If you have an ex-spouse that does not want to pay, you may need to hire an attorney to help. If you cannot afford an attorney, remember that your city and state likely offer a number of programs to aid. In some cases, people will borrow money from family and friends to fight the battle of receiving child support. After all, the children have to eat, have clothing, and stay in daycare.

The most frustrating thing is that you cannot, at least alone, make an ex-husband or ex-wife be responsible. Many times, you find that you spend more fighting for child support than what you are putting back into the family, which creates a new level of frustration and anger. The truth is that when a parent refuses to provide for the children, you cannot change that person. While this is wrong, unfair, and aggravating, the bottom line is that you cannot force anyone to do anything.

Therefore, you need to use the court system and allow it to fight for you. In the meantime, I would recommend you keep doing what you need to do in order to care for the children. The good news is that from years ago to today, our laws have changed for the better. While they are still not perfect, we do see stricter enforcement associated with child support and stronger consequences. For this reason, talk to your local agencies and courts to find out what assistance is available for you. With that, you can organize a plan for the long-term.
