The Love and Marriage Experience

Recently one of our family members shared her love and marriage journey with us in a comment. It was a joy to read of her happiness and how thrilled she was that she didn’t settle for second best.

Sometimes that can happen. There’s subtle pressure that builds up when all your friends are getting married or in serious relationships, to think what’s wrong with me? To think you need to join the clan and find someone of your own- anyone, so long as you have a partner.

When our daughter was young, at times she bemoaned the fact that she hadn’t found ‘the right one.’ Not that she’d been short of interested males but she hadn’t found ‘the right one.’ At times she despaired she ever would. Mind you, she was still in her late teens and early twenties at the time- not exactly in her dotage. I kept telling her the right one was out there- she just had to wait. It became a mantra for her. As a result every time either of us hear the Supremes song ‘You Can’t Hurry Love’ we both tend to think of this.

Anyway, she took those words to heart and waited. Like all good romances the right man turned up and they married. As I look at them together I think I’ve hardly seen a couple as happy and well suited, unless it’s Mick and me. They complement each other perfectly.

Interestingly that was the same comment someone made this week about Mick and me – that we complement each other. Yes, for those who read my Valentines Day rant recently I did get a beautiful hand made card, complete with heart and butterfly made in my favorite colors, blue, pink and lilac and made with love.

Today is the day for lovers and if you haven’t found that certain one you may be tempted to settle for second best. A word of caution here – don’t. Don’t sell yourself short.

If you have found that special on who means the world to you, then let them know not just on Valentines Day but every day.
