The Magic School Bus: Space Adventures (1994)

We love watching “The Magic School Bus.” It’s a combination of science, physics, and entertainment the whole family can enjoy together. I admit, I’ve learned quite a bit myself.

Space Adventures”” is a collection of three flight-related episodes put into one.

Our first selection, “Lost in Space,” features Arnold’s cousin Janet as a visiting know-it-all who’s determined to prove that her school is the best. Arnold wants to show her how cool it is to take a field trip with Miss Frizzle, and when an outing is mentioned, he’s sure he’s about to make Janet eat her words. But when Miss Frizzle drives them to the planetarium, his hopes are dashed — anyone can go to a planetarium. Fate comes to his rescue when the gates are locked, and Miss Frizzle decides to take them to outer space instead. Pretty soon, Janet’s not acting quite so superior any more.

In “Out of This World,” we see Dorothy Ann as she carefully tracks an asteroid that’s heading toward the earth. According to her calculations, it’s going to land on their school and destroy everything! The children go into space and figure out how to deflect the asteroid and send it into the sun instead of hurling toward Earth.

Our last show is called “Taking Flight.” Tim and Wanda worked together to build a fabulous model airplane, and it’s Wanda’s dream to be able to pilot it, from inside. Miss Frizzle decides that would be a wonderful field trip, and she shrinks the children down to passenger size. With Tim and Phoebe on the ground to operate the remote and Wanda at the controls inside the plane, they think they’ve got it all made, until the remote breaks. We learn all about lift and drag, how air moves across the wings, and just how it is that something as light as air can keep something as heavy as a plane aloft.

If you’re looking for an enjoyable and entertaining way to teach your children science, “The Magic School Bus” series is one for you. This movie is not rated.
