The Most Important Part of Your Job: Your Boss

Often people forget just how significant of a role their boss plays in their job satisfaction. Your supervisor’s style and personality should ideally match your expectations. There is no ideal boss; the key is to find the one that works best with your work style.

A great supervisor can truly make or break your job experience. He or she can turn a great job into a horrible one and a boring job into a great one. Unfortunately, we often don’t have complete control over who we work for in an organization.

Therefore, it is critical to keep this factor in mind whenever you are making a job change. Whether it is a new job or a different job in your current company, make sure to meet your future boss before you accept the new role. While there is no guarantee that this person will stay your boss indefinitely, when you do have a choice, take advantage of it.

Another factor to consider is your current situation. Do you love your current boss? Well then, my guess you also mostly enjoy your job as well. If you don’t love your current boss, what options do you have?

It may not be urgent, but if you have a hard time meshing with your supervisor’s approach to management, you should start looking for ways out. Maybe there is a lateral move within your current organization? Alternatively, you can start circulating your resume.

The other consideration is when the boss you love is leaving. Have you ever noticed in a company when a manager leaves, often a bunch of his or her subordinates end up leaving too? If you can follow a good boss to a new company, this might be an option to explore.

You may also be thinking… what? Is she crazy? I have a good job, who cares about my boss? Well, job satisfaction is critical to livelong happiness and the people you work with and for can truly make a difference. Therefore, I challenge you to keep that perspective in mind.
