The Names of God–El Elyon

But at the end of that period I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever; for His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom endures from generation to generation. And all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, but He does according to His will in the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of earth; and no one can ward off His hand or say to Him, “What hast Thou done?” Daniel 4: 34-35

Who is God Most High? He is the God that is sovereign over all. I talked a little about God’s sovereignty in my last blog, but here again we touch on the God that is over everything.

Nebuchadnezzar was a proud man. He had good reason to be. He was king of the most powerful nation in the ancient Near East. He had vast armies and piles and piles of wealth. His civilization was thriving and he was at the top of it.

His downfall however, the one that left him grazing grass in the pasture, was his pride. Nebuchadnezzar thought that he could control everything. He wanted to be worshipped above all else and in his mind, there was no room for another God. Especially not one to which he had to submit.

God’s Sovereignty

It is hard in the world we live in to look around and see horrible things and realize that God is still sovereign. Does this mean that God doesn’t care? No! Not at all!

But God is the God most high. He knows the hearts of men, and ordains things for his purposes. Our refusal to recognize the God Most High in our lives will often result in our humbling. But when we recognize that God is the Most High, our El Elyon, it can give confidence in uncertain circumstances.

For further study, read the book of Daniel and highlight or mark every time you see “God Most High”. When you are finished, write down everything that you’ve learned about El Elyon.
