The New iPods

Rumor has it that the iPod is in for the next revolution on the Apple agenda. Reports are coming in about a possible special media event to be held by Apple sometime in September. During that event, industry analysts predict that four new Apple iPods will be introduced, each based on the successful Mac OS X operating systems.

Four new iPods models are predicted, each with NAND Flash. The iPods should be available in two distinct types: one type featuring the traditional click wheel, and another featuring a touch screen, much like the new Apple iPhone, but dubbed the iPod Touch.

Of course the new iPods would be be thicker than the iPhone, since they have a traditional hard drive instead of the slim flash memory that is part of the iPhone.

The touch screen would be pretty cool in an iPod, especailly since it would take advantage of the new Cover Flow technology already available in iTunes. With Cover Flow, users can page through album art to locate the songs they wish to hear, almost like flipping through an old fashioned juke box.

Curious photos of a squat looking iPod or Nano with a large screen on the top half of it have been making the rounds of the Apple fan sites. Many are calling the new device “ugly.” Apple’s legal department has been pretty miffed about the photos and has contacted the web sites asking them to remove them or face legal action, deeming that the photos violate proprietary information. So, we could either see this as a confirmation by Apple that these photos really do indicate an upcoming redesigned iPod or Nano, or that Apple isn’t too happy that iPod fans are not impressed with the new look, and so decided it should be tweaked a bit more.
