The New Toddler

A new baby joined our family this week. She officially entered the world of toddlerhood on June 18 by turning one.

Before she was placed in our home we were alerted that she had delays. That didn’t come as a surprise as most of the children placed in our care have delays of some sort. The news was that she wasn’t crawling.

I don’t know if the workers who were watching her weren’t paying attention or she didn’t have anything to reach for, but she has been crawling short distances here. She likes to pull herself up to standing holding on to furniture, but then doesn’t know what to do or how to get down. She gets a little scared.

This toddler loves to drink milk and is a good eater. She even does very well with getting a spoon to her mouth, although she has not mastered getting food on the spoon. There’s nothing we’ve given her that she hasn’t eaten yet, although she didn’t want formula. She handles a sippy cup very well.

She babbles and is finally being a happier baby. She and Jessie play well together and Jessie likes having a little sister again.

She is a tiny toddler. She’s only 16 pounds and wearing nine-month clothes. She came with a car seat and a recommendation to put her in an infant carrier. While her weight is right for a carrier, the time is right for a convertible seat. When we’re in the car she’s rear facing and strapped in properly. She doesn’t like it at all, so I wonder if she has been rear facing at all up to now.

She’s getting better about sleeping as she’s becoming more secure in our home. I don’t know how long she’ll stay. For now, I’m the mother of two toddlers.
