The Quarter, Part 4

Don’t miss Parts 1, 2, and 3, to find out how we got here.

The waiting room was cold and lonely. We settled in with bad coffee and old magazines. We ended up waiting around a half-hour before the surgeon returned to tell us that everything went fine. He presented us with the quarter in a cup with a pink lid. The nurse returned a short time later to take us to Jessie. Jessie looked good. She was holding a popsicle and would eat five more. We were all very happy that she was able to eat so many.

I wanted nothing more than to go home. I hadn’t packed anything for an overnight stay. The doctors wanted to continue to monitor Jessie and didn’t want us on the road so early in the morning. We retired to Jessie’s room for the night. Jessie slept well. Chris and I didn’t. Chris slept on the couch and I ended up in the wooden rocking chair next to the bed. An alarm on the monitor was beeping all night. When a doctor came in I begged her to turn it off, but she said the staff had to monitor. I figured if they were monitoring, they would check on the alarm.

Jessie ate a bite of scrambled eggs and blueberry muffin, and a whole bowl of grapes for breakfast. The doctor was pleased and released us. A tech came to remove the IV line from Jessie’s arm and did a terrible job. She hurt Jessie and made her bleed. I thought she should know how to remove an IV from a toddler. I was so glad when she was finally finished and we could leave.

Jessie has been doing great since. She is back to her old self. We don’t play with her piggy bank anymore.
