As a missionary, I remember how wonderful of a feeling it was to constantly be in the service of my fellow man. I was out there preaching the Gospel, and sharing the most important gift with people that they could possibly receive. The Gospel of Jesus Christ. So many times, people look back on their missions as the most spiritual times in their lives, and I am sure it is because of the constant service that missionaries are providing around the world.
Making time for service in my life is very difficult. I am a stay at home Mom to two small children. It keeps me very busy and many days, it keeps me overwhelmed. It is hard to think outside myself, and the needs of my family and reach out to others. So many times I hear in the church, “It is just not my season to do that sort of thing”. While I think this is a true statement, we have to be careful to not use our busy lives as an excuse to not do service for others. But, how can I possibly fit it in with everything else I have to do? That is a question that I ask myself all the time.
President Monson is quoted on the new LDS.org website as saying, “We are the Lord’s hands here upon the earth, with the mandate to serve and to lift His children. He is dependent upon each of us.”
The Lord cannot accomplish His goals without us. But, I would venture to say that we are living lives of service. Sure, we can always do more, but we serve daily in our own lives, as faithful members of the church. We hold callings, we go to meetings, we do our visiting and home teaching, we try to talk to our friends about the church when opportunities arise. People who are not of our faith may think that we are doing more than our share. We are doing above and beyond! But, there is always more to do.
I do not have all the answers. I know that I can do better. That I can always do more. And, as members of the church, that is our responsibility.
