The Six Week Visit

On the day of my daughter’s birth, the six week visit seemed rather far away. Yet, here we are six weeks later and we, mommy and baby, are going for the last visit with our midwife. We have been looking forward to seeing our midwife again and after such a successful pregnancy and birth experience we are excited to bring our amazing pre and post natal journey to a close.

We arrived early and parked on the street in front of the midwife’s house (like we had done numerous times before). This time our wonderful midwife greeted us from her front porch and beckoned us to meet her at her carriage house in the back. With both children in the double stroller, we crossed the street and jogged up the drive way to the carriage house.

The baby was sleeping so we started with my six week check up. The midwife took my blood pressure as usual and then proceeded to ask how all the post partum happenings were going. She asked about diet, supplements, and exercise (which I had been doing since week four). She went through her six week “exiting” paperwork and then had me step on the scale. Since my last prenatal visit I had lost twenty two pounds. The baby was still sleeping and my son was busy playing with toys, so we did my pap smear (the midwife is the only person I am comfortable with doing it) and basically the post partum body exam during which the baby awoke. After a quick snack the baby had her exam. She weighted in at eleven pounds and her reflexes, heart, lungs, etc. were all good. Our marvellous midwife snapped a few photos for her photo wall. After some hugs we said good bye. It was an amazingly wonderful experience. I really hope I can have her as my midwife for my future pregnancies too!
