The Song Remembers When

I was humming along with “Hi-Ho”, from Disney’s “Snow White” soundtrack which happened to play on my MP3 player a few days ago when I suddenly found my mind transported back about 12 years to the last time I heard the song. It was on a work’s outing – believe it or not – to Edinburgh (I was living in the UK at the time).

A couple of co-workers and I decided to tag along with a student weekend bus trip – we worked at our local University – up to Scotland’s beautiful capital city. We tagged along on the bus that is, we’re not sure where the students slept but we had a rather nice hotel not too far from Princess Street! We had plans to sightsee and shop on Saturday after we arrived, go to see a movie on Saturday night, and then do a little more shopping on our way back to the bus on Sunday morning.

Our plans went well and we had a great time. I don’t remember what we did. I don’t remember what we saw at the movies (it’s possible it was Sister Act but I’m not 100% certain on that – lot of water has run under my bridge since then), but what I do remember is a lot of laughing. It was the perfect weekend away. Even our cheap cozy hotel was lovely.

What sticks out from the entire weekend however is that on the Sunday morning we found that the Disney store was open, and as we’d never been to a Disney store before we went inside. Above a huge display of soft toys was a huge screen that was showing one of the Disney sing-a-long videos. I don’t know how long we stood there, but it was almost time to go for the bus by the time we eventually (reluctantly) left. Three grown-up professional women, singing along with familiar Disney songs that went back decades, and we had the best time imaginable. We went for our bus still singing “Hi-Ho” much to the amusement of the students!

Most of the finer details of that trip have now disappeared from my memory, replaced by more important and up-to-date ones, but that one experience in the Disney store remains with me. The weekend I remember as being one of the most fun times in my life, but it’s the memory of Disney’s magic and the songs we sang that makes me smile.
