The State of Your Home Affects Your Mood

Do you want to relieve some stress in your life? Then make your home as inviting as possible. People don’t always realize how the state of your house can affect your mood.

There is nothing like coming home after a long, tiring day of work to be able to walk into your home and feel good about your surroundings. On the other hand, there is nothing like coming home after a long, tiring day of work and walking into a mess.

Who wants to look at piles of dishes or papers scattered all over? Who wants to deal with the dust and inability to find something important you need? It is the last thing you want to deal with.

The majority of the time my home is neat and organized (well, except for those hidden areas I am slowly working on). But last weekend everything kind of got let go. My father had suffered a heart attack and so I spent most of that weekend visiting him at the hospital. For three days in a row I had to drive a half hour there and then a half hour back.

Needless to say, the last thing on my mind was my house. But come Monday morning, after everything had settled down and my father was back at home resting, I had to face the mess.

Waking up and seeing what I had to deal with was depressing. So then I thought about people who wake up everyday and see that…I honestly cannot imagine. It really affected my mood and I found myself more than a little irritable and impatient with people.

It could be that a messy house is causing your stress. And if not, then it could be that a messy house is contributing to your stress, or at least not making it any better. No matter, it is virtually impossible to not have your mood affected by a house that is in disarray.

If there was ever a good reason to clean your house (although there are dozens), how about eliminating some of the stress in your life? The initial cleaning of it might be stressful but the end result will be worth it.
