The Sunny Side

left

If someone told me that I’d be dragging a water table outside for my swimsuit clad kid to play with on March 18th I would have likely thought he or she was still wasted from St. Patrick’s Day.

After all, we live in the Frozen Tundra that is northern Wisconsin, where it snows in June. Experiencing 80-degree temps in March is beyond the luck of the Irish; it’s downright dreamy.

And by dreamy I mean hello global warming, where have you been all my life?

Our neighbor flew to Los Angeles early this morning only to find that the southern California metropolis was 20 degrees colder than her departure city of Milwaukee.

If you are a parent, then you know how priceless it is to be able to sample summer in the middle of March.

What mom doesn’t relish the idea of kicking her kids outside to burn off steam instead of trying to find ways to cure cabin fever?

This weekend our neighborhood was teeming with kids biking, scooting, roller blading and cartwheeling in shorts and t-shirts. It was like we were living in an altered universe. The normal high for this time of year in our neck of the woods is 39 degrees. We’ve hit 80 three days in a row.

Who says parents shouldn’t dream big?

It’s like winning the weather lottery. What’s more, I plan on making the most of my jackpot.

I would suggest you do the same.

Save for parts of the West Coast, the entire country is enjoying a taste of summer right now, and according to meteorologists the record-breaking high temperatures will be sticking around for at least another week.

If you are a parent, don’t waste a moment of this brilliant weather.

Grab the kids and head outside. Picnic–in the park or in your backyard. Throw a blanket on a patch of dormant grass and nosh on some sandwiches and fruit. Getting your children to eat healthy won’t be nearly as challenging when they’re munching outside. Bust out the sidewalk chalk or plan a scavenger hunt. Or, let your kids get dirty helping you plant perennials.

Just make sure they aren’t wasting all this glorious weather sitting inside playing video games, watching TV or fooling around on Facebook.

How did you make the most of this shot of summer?
