Based on the faith-affirming novel by James Stovall, “The Ultimate Gift” is the story of one young man’s quest for a life of fun and his grandfather’s dreams of a better future for him.
Jason Stevens (Drew Fuller) has never had to work for anything in his life. He’s got a trust fund, a mother who doles out money like candy, and he’s living large. His girlfriend loves his easy spending habits, and together they party until dawn with little thought about others.
When Jason’s grandfather, Red (James Garner) passes away, the family gathers around like vultures, wanting to know what they would inherit. One by one, they are disappointed, even though the will is very generous. Each of them wanted the whole kit and caboodle, the millions upon millions Red left behind. The animosity between family members grows as they compare bequests and feel that they’ve been slighted.
Jason only shows up for the reading of the will reluctantly. He doesn’t want to be there at all—a lot of bad blood existed between himself and his grandfather. He’s amazed to learn that Red really did leave him something, but he’s angry when he learns he has to earn his bequest. Red has set up a series of tasks, and it’s only after Jason has completed these tasks that he’ll be given his inheritance. Only money gets him to accept, and he starts the most incredible journey of his life.
A chance meeting in the park brings Alexia and Emily into his life. Alexia is a single mother, struggling to care for the needs of Emily (Abigail Breslin) who is dying from leukemia. It’s through Emily that Jason’s heart finally begins to soften, and he slowly starts to accept the things he’s being taught. When he reaches the end of the challenge, he discovers that the lessons he learned along the way are worth much more than any money on earth.
