My nephew loved the Wiggles when he was younger than his now three years. He still likes them, but not as much as he used to. Anyway, I digress. I decided that if my nephew liked the Wiggles that my daughter would, too. We bought a three-pack of DVDs and one of the included is “Dance Party.” Although the DVD came out in 2000, it was produced in 1995 which probably makes it one of their first recorded performances. It is quite obvious that this video was made before the Wiggles became famous because of the sets and the costumes for the Wiggles’ friends. Also, their shirts do not have the Wiggles logo on it like the shirts now. Anthony was even in green instead of blue, which is now his signature color. No matter – this is one of my daughter’s favorite videos.
The video begins showing the four Wiggles – Greg, Anthony, Murray, and Jeff – in their Big Red Car, which looks like it is made out of painted cardboard. They all introduce themselves, except for Jeff who is always falling asleep. This is one of the trademarks of the group. Of course, the other three Wiggles shout their now infamous, “Wake up, Jeff!” as Jeff shakes his head and jumps “out” of the Big Red Car. Later on we are introduced to the Wiggles’ friends – Wags the Dog, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus, and Captain Feathersword, who is played by three different people in this video (including Anthony).
The entire video leads your child through song and dance. My favorite song is “Nicky Nacky Nocky Noo,” which is a silly song that Captain Feathersword sings about what he learned in pirate school. It also teaches children a little bit about parts of the body. I think my daughter’s favorite song is “Can You Point Your Fingers and Do the Twist?” She likes to dance when it comes on and when they sing, “We’re gonna go up and go down, get back up and turn around,” she turns around.
There are fifteen segments on this DVD, fourteen of which are songs. The only down side is that there is no menu. The DVD just plays on its own from beginning to end and then stops itself. The Wiggles: Dance Party is a great way to introduce your child to the Wiggles or an excellent addition to your Wiggles collection.
