Things You Learn When Electricity It Out

You never realize how often you go to turn on a light inside the walk in closet or any room even when you know the electricity is out. It’s force of habit almost to reach for the switch. It makes us realize how dependant we are on it these days.

Here is a list of the things you can’t do and those things you should do when the power is out.

You can’t listen to radio and get updates about what is happening or turn on the computer unless it runs by battery.

It makes you realize that a backup generator might be a good investment.

You can’t go on the computer, watch TV play computer games etc.

You can’t open the automatic garage door unless you have the strength to lift it manually. Anyone not in good health, as a friend of mine is, didn’t have a hope of getting her car out of the garage.

You can’t go on the computer, watch TV, or play computer games.
You are reduced to torchlight and candles. Do you know where you candles are? Could you get to them easily in an emergency? Where is the torch? Could you find it easily?

Resist the temptation to snack. Keep the freezer and fridge closed as much as possible to keep the cold in. Don’t keep opening it. Food will keep for hours if you leave it closed.

Don’t hassle the electricity company, unless it is a life threatening emergency. They are doing the best they can and will get it sorted quicker with less interruptions and distractions. Those who require sleep apnea machines and other life support equipment need to let emergency people know so they can be attended to first.

You learn what people are made of. The kindness of people to help others shows in situations like this. In our area those with electricity on rang the radio station to say they had freezer space available for anyone who needed to store their food so it would not go off. Even though she still didn’t have electricity on, a woman rang the radio to thank the workmen and volunteers for their hard work. She didn’t want it to go unnoticed or unappreciated.
