Third Grade Math Curriculum

Here is a list of math functions your third grader should know by the time they finish the year. The first group of items are the most important things for your third grader to know and they should be practiced on a daily basis. The remaining items in can be taught along with the other lessons.
By the end of the third grade, a student must be able to do the following problems effortlessly.

  • Addition and subtraction facts to 25
  • Multiplication and division facts to 100
  • Simple fractions and equivalents
  • Word problems that involve all of the functions mentioned above. For practice, I recommend critical thinking practice books.

Your third grader should also be able to:

  • Read and write numbers to 5 places (ten-thousands) in expanded notation
  • Read and write roman numerals from I to XX plus L, C, D, and M
  • Round numbers and estimate outcomes in their head.
  • Understand positive and negative numbers in daily life, also introduce the negative numbers on a number line.
  • Understand and calculate perimeter, area, volume and geometric constructions
  • Understand and know symbols for similar and congruent figures
  • Understand properties of solid figures
  • Compare standard American and metric measurement
  • Read charts, and graphs and complete patterns and sequences

Numerous online websites provide lessons and worksheets to help your third grader learn these concepts. If you would like to purchase a simple math lesson book to help you teach these concepts you can try Math made Easy. If you would like a math curriculum that teaches these concepts without much help on your part, you can try teaching textbooks, or a math CDROM set.
