This Just In — Kerry Blair

It takes a certain kind of genius to write humor; I’m absolutely convinced of that. After reading Kerry Blair’s novel “This Just In,” I’m even more sure that I’m right – she’s a genius, no bones about it.

The novel is written in first person from the perspective of Jillanne Caldwell, a self-described perky blonde reporter for Channel 2’s hit television show “What’s Up, Tucson?” She was also first runner-up to Miss America a few years ago, robbed of the crown! She should have won!

She’s shown her mettle many a time, tasting chili while covering cook-offs, risking her skin under the harsh rays of the sun, and, if that’s not enough to convince you, she’s a Primary teacher. Only the bravest are asked to take upon them that difficult task.

Jillanne is getting ready for her broadcast one day when the story breaks in the newsroom: Senator Teagler’s son Connor has been kidnapped. While this news is disturbing, it’s made even worse by the fact that this little boy is in Jillanne’s Primary class. Using her “in” with the famous family, Jillanne convinces her boss to let her cover the story, but she wants to do more than that – she wants to find Connor.

Upon reaching the Teagler family ranch, Jillanne begins her search, after carefully applying sunscreen, of course. And what does one wear to head out on a hunt? Only she would know, and dresses accordingly. She takes with her Clay Eskiminzin, a tracker who knows his way around and doesn’t like her, but she’s too busy to think about her popularity ratings – she has a little boy to find!

Liberally sprinkled with fashion tips, this LDS book is a riot. I never thought I’d be so drawn to such a shallow heroine. But as I learned, Jillanne’s shallowness is only skin deep. She proves herself to be so much more than just a beauty queen.
