Those ‘Other’ Candidates

flags
In any presidential election, there are always more than two candidates. We don’t always hear about those candidates but they’re there.

Ron Paul

Ron Paul is having his own convention in St. Paul Minnesota. The timing of this is not to be missed though as he’s having the convention on September 2, the Tuesday of the Republican Convention. That same Republican convention by the way to which Ron Paul was not invited, and that same Republican party that has not embraced Ron Paul but rather John McCain.

Support Without Supporting

What’s really interesting about Ron Paul at this point is that he’s not in fact supporting McCain. However, he’s not abandoning the Republican party either. He says that he has about 50 delegates that he will encourage to go to the Republican National Convention in September and that he is encouraging them to be “active and positive”. No mud slinging, no berating policies. . .just participating. (Am I off base in saying it’s a little refreshing to have a major political candidate play nice?) The impetus for holding Paul’s own convention is in part the fact that he was not invited to speak at the Republican National Convention.

So he’s not conceding (frankly, concession at this point is not really necessary), and he’s not whole heartedly supporting, and he’s holding his own convention because he wasn’t asked to speak and he still has something to say.

Bob Barr

Bob Barr is the Libertarian candidate for President. Libertarians essentially are for limited government and believe that we are not best served by a two party system. They sum up their party’s values as “live and let live with a balanced checkbook.” In a later blog I will talk about John McCain and how he is a noted constructionist (one who upholds the constitution). Libertarians are constructionists to the extreme finding that even McCain has exceptions.

There are actually a whole slew of folks who are officially nominated within their party’s ballot. But we will have to talk about those in another blog.
