Throwing a Puppy Shower—Step 2: Food

Once the invitations for your puppy shower are sent and the RSVPs tallied, you’ll want to start thinking about your menu. Unlike other types of showers, puppy showers have to accommodate both human and canine palettes.

For the People Guests

• Beverages – The typical drink options are always nice, like water, soft drinks, or juice. However, some alcoholic drinks have colorful dog names which would also be fun. (i.e. Mad Dog shots, and Hair of the Dog cocktails or Salty Dog cocktails.)

• Appetizers or finger foods – If you want to serve fare keeping with the theme of your party, consider any variation of hot dogs, hush puppies, or even corned beef hash (which Wayne says reminds him of dog food). Otherwise, serving anything you’d serve at a normal party would work.

• Cake – It doesn’t have to be a cake, but I can’t imagine throwing a party without offering some kind of dessert. If you did want to have cake, bakeries often offer dog face-shaped cakes.

• Plates, Napkins, and Silverware – Finding dog-themed party supplies is a snap. For instance, Tail Waggin’ Celebrations has all manner of dog party tableware and Celebrate Express has a dog party pack with everything you might need.

For the Dog Guests

• Beverages – Providing bowls of water, at least one per guest, is the way you want to go. However, there are also brews made specifically for your best friend that might be fun to let your dog guests try.

• Treats – Dogs aren’t going to expect you to leave a plate of treats out for them, but if you wanted to let their people know where they’re kept so they could dole them out as they see fit, I suspect your canine party goers would be mighty appreciative.

• Cake – Find doggie cakes made for dogs at places like Dogma Bakery and Perky Paws Café. You could also make your own from recipes at Dog Birthday Parties. Or, depending on how many dogs you’re inviting, it might even behoove you to go with individual cakes, such as the Puppy Cup Cakes from FunStuffforDogs.com.
