Tips for Buying Nursing Bras

Your belly isn’t the only thing that expands during pregnancy. You’ll find that your bras will fit a little more snugly, too, if they fit at all. After your baby is born, when your milk comes in, is when the real changes happen. For example, you might start off as a 34B, grow to a 36C during your pregnancy, expand to a 36DD when your milk comes in, and return to a 36D cup once your milk supply is regulated. These constant changes in bust size make bra shopping tricky!

Bras you buy during your last trimester may fit again once your milk supply regulates if you allow for room to grow. Buying a nursing bra that fits well on the tightest closure is the smartest way to go. Just in case your size changes more than you expect, don’t buy your favorite in every color available. Wait until after your baby is born to stock up on nursing bras. Even though many suggest that your late pregnancy size is about the same as your post pregnancy size, this is not always true. Some woman don’t truly expand until after the baby is born.

When your milk first comes in, you’ll likely be very uncomfortable, so make sure you buy a bra that will not be too tight. A sleep bra might be your best choice for those extreme days.

A few days after your milk comes in, your breasts should stop changing for the most part and it is safe to invest in several quality nursing bras. When shopping for nursing bras, try out different styles to see which one you’d be most comfortable using. There are different styles of openings and clasps. Some are easier to do single-handed than others. You’ll be holding a squirming baby when you’re using these, so don’t choose a bra that you need two hands to open or close. Pay attention to the fabric, as well. Is it quality? Will it withstand many, many repeated washings? Look for a bra with smooth texture and neat seams that won’t show underneath your clothes. Make sure you’ll be able to secure nursing pads, an essential during those first months.

You may also want to purchase a nursing bra tank top. These are extremely comfortable. Personally, I love my Glamourmom® Nursing Bra Tank. It is easier to wash than a regular nursing bra, can be worn alone or under other shirts, has mesh pockets to hold nursing pads in place, and it is extra long so it covers my midsection and rear end when I bend over. I have found it to be very supportive and is a great substitute for a nursing bra, especially when I’m at home all day. I love not having to expose my tummy whenever I nurse.

Now… if only they sold nursing bras in more exciting colors and patterns!
