Tips for Cooking Contest Enthusiasts

You might have read my earlier blog, stating that the Pillsbury Bake-Off is open for entries again. This contest is appealing to many home-cooks for a variety of reasons. First, the contest utilizes store-bought ingredients such as refrigerated biscuit dough, pie crust, and tortillas as staple ingredients. Second, the grand prize is $1 Million. You can’t beat that.

If you’re a cooking contest enthusiast, or if you’ve always wanted to enter but didn’t know where to start, here are a few tips to get you into the kitchen.

Keep it Simple—This seems logical enough, right? But, wait! What if your amazing recipe from your dear Aunt Grace has 27 ingredients and takes 17 hours to prepare? Chances are, you’ll need to adapt the recipe. If you take a look at various contest sites, you’ll see that most contest winning recipes are very simple, utilizing only a few steps and a few key ingredients. So get creative. Pull out Aunt Grace’s recipe then adapt it!

Get Creative—Sure, everyone has had a biscuit. But has everyone had your biscuit fold-overs? Probably not. Take your favorite recipes and figure out how you can make them by utilizing some of the contest ingredients. You might be surprised what you come up with!

Think Outside the BoxForeign cuisine is a big hit right now in American culture. Why not find recipes from your own heritage or from a distant land that you adore and adapt them? It’s a creative way to put a world-friendly flare on your recipe.

Whatever you decide to make, remember you can’t win if you don’t play. Don’t be afraid to get in the kitchen, get your hands knee-deep in flour, and experiment. The best recipes are born out of failed attempts, so don’t get discouraged. Keep going, and who knows…maybe one day, YOU’LL be the big winner.
