Paying your tithing is always a choice that you make. Each month you can choose not to pay it, though some months may seem more difficult than others. When you are truly struggling to make ends meet, it can be difficult to choose to send in the tithing check each month. However paying tithing is a commandment, and we should follow it.
Additionally paying tithing is a commandment with a promise. In Malachi 3:10 it reads: “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse . . . and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”
The Lord has promised us blessings when we pay our tithing. These blessings may be monetary. We may be blessed to be able to meet our financial obligations and to manage our money wisely. Budgeting becomes much more important when we give ten percent of our income to the Lord each month.
However, these blessings will be spiritual as well. We may have greater patience with our trials or greater strength to bear our burdens. We may be blessed with peace or insight on how to help our children through difficult times. We may have opportunities opened to us that may not be there before.
It is also important to remember that we may not see the blessings. The blessings may be things that do not happen. We may be blessed with health, so we do not become sick. Our car may not break down, or the washing machine may last two years longer than it should.
Personally I have seen all these type of blessings in my life as a result of paying tithing. I know that it is a true principle. I have been touched as I have heard others share similar stories of the blessings that they have received as they have paid tithing. If you are struggling to pay your tithing make a commitment to yourself that you will pay your tithing for at least three months. Write down the blessings that you are experiencing in your life as a result of paying your tithing. Remember that it may not be that you are suddenly wealthy, but look at the spirituality in your home, and your life.
