To Temp or Not to Temp?

More and more job seekers are considering temporary employment. There certainly are a lot of companies advertising for temporary employees. However, people are constantly asking themselves whether temporary work is a good path to take, or if it should be avoided like the plague.

In the past, I have also considered applying for temporary work. I needed a job and I couldn’t find what I was looking for. The temporary services had the kinds of positions that I wanted, but each job only lasted for a few weeks. I finally found the job I wanted and never did work for a temporary service, but I have done some research on the subject and have formed an opinion of these sorts of jobs and I’d like to share my thoughts with you.

First, though, here are the Pros and Cons of working for a temporary service:

PROS:
• It can help you establish an employment history
• It gives you a chance to practice your skills
• Temp work may lead to a permanent job
• Temp work pays the bills while you’re looking for a permanent job

CONS:
• May not be stable employment
• May not offer benefits
• May not lead to a permanent position
• Job can take up the time you were using to look for employment

These are the basics as far as temporary services go. The jobs are probably not ideal, but they can be beneficial in some situations. I believe that whether or not you “temp” depends on your situation as you are looking for a job. Are you desperate for funds and ready to do almost any job as long as you can pay the rent? If so, then go ahead and give temporary work a try. It will give you the cash you need right now and maybe it will lead to a more permanent situation. However, if you have a little money saved up and you can stand to wait a few weeks to find a job, then temporary work is probably a waste of time for you. It would be better for you to hold out for a while and see if you can find the stable job that you want.

The main thing that I want you to gain from this post, though, is that temporary employment is not a bad idea. It definitely can help you get through a financial tight spot and there are thousands of permanent workers who found their jobs through this kind of service. If you really need a job, don’t automatically reject the idea of working on a temporary basis. It’s still a job, isn’t it?
