Top 6 Myths About Home Businesses

These days, more and more people are choosing to start their own home based business. For many people, it is a perfectly ideal situation. Not everyone is cut out to work from home though. It is not as easy as many people think. There are a lot of myths surrounding the idea of working from home as well. I’d like to address some of those.

Myth #1: You need to be a sales person to have success with a home based business.

The fact is, home based businesses come in all shapes and sizes. There are plenty of home based sales opportunities out there, and if you’re good at sales, go for it, but sales is just a small part of the home based business world. Being a salesperson will be helpful in getting your business off the ground, but it is certainly not a requirement. Make sure your product is good enough to sell itself, and that will work as well as any sales pitch. There are many services and industries out there that make a good home based business that will not require sales skills.

Myth #2: You’ll get rich quick.

We’ve all heard it about a million times. If it sounds too good to be true…do I really need to tell you the rest? A home based business is not necessarily easy. It takes hard work and dedication, and there is no guarantee that you will become rich overnight. Hard work is the only way, and it would be wise to ignore all of the “get rich quick” schemes out there.

Myth #3: Home Businesses are Cheap

This may or may not be a myth for you. How much your home based business will cost you really depends on what kind of business you are starting, and what you already have. For instance, obviously your home based business will be a lot less expensive if you already have a computer that is equipped to use. That said, you have to spend money to make money. You’re more than likely going to have to put some sort of capital into your home based business.

Myth #4: You cannot work with kids at home

Children will place added demands on you and your business. That does not mean that you cannot work with them around though, you will just have to put some extra planning into it. Try and find a location for your office where you can shut out all of your distractions if you need to, but where you can also monitor your kids when you need to. Set a schedule, and stick to it! Make sure your family and friends are aware of your schedule! Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help or accept help that is offered when you need it. Nobody expects you to be superman or wonder woman!

Myth #5: You can’t really make any money.

Funny how this myth seems to directly contradict the popular myth about getting rich quick, isn’t it? That should serve as a clue that they are both false. While you aren’t likely to get rich quick, but recently, a research firm found that home businesses bring in an average of $63,000 per year. The money is there, waiting to be made, it just takes hard work, and a lot of heart and soul. That is why it is crucial to find something you love doing!

Myth #6: Home businesses are not real businesses

That is just absurd. It’s a home BUSINESS. “Business” is defined as:
-purposeful activity
-A particular field or endeavor
-A usually commercial or mercantile activity engaged in as a means of livelihood.

A home business fits all of those definitions, in some cases even better than a “regular” job would!
