Top Ten Resources for Charitable Giving, Part I

Christmas is the Season of Giving… but where?

If you’re looking for a way to bring joy to others during the holiday season, you might run into the dilemma of not knowing where to make donations. You may have many questions.

  • Which charities are reputable organizations?
  • How will my money be spent?
  • How much actually goes to those in need?

Lots of things probably come to mind as you decide how and where to give. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite charities, with links to each of their websites so you can learn more about them. I also advise that you do your own research to make sure that a charity measures up to your standards.

The following charities are some you may have heard of, but I think each one bears mentioning. These groups truly care about people in need, in my opinion (in no particular order):

1. Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has been around for well over 100 years. It began as a disaster relief organization and still engages in such functions, yet it has expanded to provide for everyday needs as well as extras during the holidays. You have likely seen volunteers outside stores and business ringing a bell and collecting funds in a red “kettle.” You can also donate at the website. This would also be a good source for extending holiday cheer to hurricane and other disaster victims still displaced or still in need. Salvation Army works around the world as well as locally, providing hope, care, and comfort.

2. St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital

What better gift can we give than life? St. Jude’s provides lifesaving medical treatment and care, free of charge, for children whose families do not have the resources to pay for their care. No family is turned away solely for financial reasons.

3. Make a Wish Foundation

Special needs children and those with serious medical issues (frequently including life threatening medical problems) are able to make a wish that the Foundation works to make come true. This wonderful program helps bring great joy to suffering children and their families.
